June 2018 4 I was paddling a kayak down the Missouri and Kansas rivers last weekend thinking about the business of sports and the people I've met over the years who dedicate their lives either to coaching, playing or organizing athletic and recreational events. I grew up surrounded by neighbors, who in their glory days, were stars on college football and baseball fields. By the time I came around, they were coaching youth leagues or volunteering their time to boys' and girls' programs in various capacities. Over the years, the cheerleading coaches who also coached volleyball, basketball and tennis, and the parents who helped with soccer games, cross country and track and field events all had one thing in common. A passion for sports and the kids who play sports. And that passion continues throughout their lives. I've met quite a few people recently who continue to exhibit their passion for youth, amateur and even professional sports in communities across the country. Earlier this year, I met Max Smith, the visionary behind the InSports Foundation. Max is passionate about giving all kids an opportunity to play sports. He organizes sports camps, awards scholarships and partners with others to introduce sports as a way to introduce kids to a healthy and active lifestyle. There are others too, who talk about their work in various organizations connect- ed to sports events. Tim Berger is passionate about catfishing and spreading his love of the catfish tournament scene across the country. Ask him to relate some fish tales and he'll show you pictures of the monster cat he caught and released. Then he'll show you more with a smile on his face. John Teegarden, director of adaptive softball with Midwest Adaptive Sports is proud to share how the non-profit organization positively impacts people with phys- ical, emotional or cognitive challenges through adaptive recreational and competi- tive sports. He's looking for opportunities to spread the word and bring the game to more people across the country. And then there are the people who work to promote sports, from the destination marketing organizations to the facility managers and staff who beam with pride while talking about a local athletic complex with fields that quickly drain rain water to the arrival of new portable sports courts that provide additional space for more people to play. You'll read about people and places like the ones I've just mentioned in each and every issue of SportsEvents magazine. When you talk to others in the business, you'll feel a sense of pride hearing their passion for sports. SportsEvents is published monthly by Covey Communications Corp., P.O.
