May 2018 4 Like many of you, the SportsEvents team attended the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Symposium in Minneapolis, Minn., recently. The annual meeting gives those of us in the industry a chance to reconnect, conduct business and learn new skills. It's also a great opportunity to make a difference within the host community. This year's beneficiary of the NASC Sports Legacy Fund, sponsored by Orlando North Seminole County, was InSports Foundation, a Minneapolis nonprofit organization that gets children involved in sporting opportunities by providing free sports clinics. SportsEvents Media Group was proud to sponsor the community service project and participate in the Sports Sampler Camp where students from Brooklyn Middle School participated in four different sports and learned about the importance of team work, healthy eating and goal-setting. With 50 volun- teers rising early to meet the middle schoolers at the University of Minnesota Recreation and Wellness Center, we donned purple InSports shirts and joined in the games and team challenges. Not only were these students able to participate and learn about a variety of sporting activities, InSports also received a cash donation from NASC from a silent auction, raffle ticket sales and donations totaling more than $21,000. The donation to InSports allows the organization to continue its mission to introduce young people to new sports and share the message that staying active, eating healthy and setting goals, regardless of their financial status, is a win for their community. Watching these young people shouting words of encouragement, celebrating scores with high-fives and huddling together for group hugs in a cheerful and safe environment shows why it's so important for all of us to get in the game. Speaking of getting in the game, the scheduled golf tournament sponsored by SportsEvents turned into a day of curling at Chaska Curling Center because of concerns about unpredictable weather. Participants reported having a great day competing as teams in the state-of-the-art curling center and many new friendships were formed over some spirited and intense games. Congratulations to NASC for another terrific event! We look forward to seeing everyone next year in Knoxville, Tenn. SportsEvents is published monthly by Covey Communications Corp., P.O.
