January 2018 32 SPECIAL FEATURE: Awards & Recognition Issue The U.S. Futsal Northeast Regional Indoor Soccer Championships held in February at the Wildwoods Convention Center in the Wild- woods, N.J., is the largest futsal competition east of the Rocky Mountains. The four-day indoor soccer tournament attracts more than 2,000 athletes from around the world to play indoors to compete for a coveted spot at the U.S. Futsal National Championship. Futsal, a variation of soccer that is played indoors on small, hard-surface courts is played between two teams with five players each, including a goalkeeper. Using a smaller ball and a smaller playing surface means athletes must use creativity and finesse to pass the ball and score in this fast-paced game. The Wildwood Convention Center is ideal for this type of play with customizable floor plans that work well with the round-robin format and the unobstructed floor plan and 35-foot high ceilings provide an open viewing experience for spectators. During the champion- ships, athletes compete on seven official special hard-court athletic surfaces with multiple age brackets competing for prizes and recognition as the best-of- the-best for the teamwork, abilities and skills. The Northeast Regional Indoor Soccer Champion- ship is one of three regional competitions that lead up to the U.S. Futsal National Championship where the best teams compete for national honors. U.S. Futsal sponsors state, regional and na- tional tournaments across the country and the organization is affiliated with both U.S. Youth Soccer and U.S. Soccer. While participating at the championships, athletes and their families take advantage of the world-famous Wildwoods Boardwalk that consists of 38 blocks of amusement piers, waterparks, retail shops, family entertainment, hotels and dining options along the Atlantic Ocean. .n Atlantic Coast Baseball's Cap Classic is held each year in Monroeville, Pa., just outside of Pittsburg and has sold out in each of eight years of the tournament's existence. More than 200 teams competed in 2016 and 2017, up from 192 teams in 2015 and 150 teams in 2014, bringing athletes from two dozen states and two Canadian provinces each year. Since its inception, the Cap Classic has become one of the largest tournaments on the East Coast where teams compete in multiple games throughout the weekend. Teams com- pete by age division with age brackets ranging from under eight to high school level. Each team receives 18 free customized New Era Team Hats that they can design with their team logo and colors. This year the opening ceremonies will be held at the PNC Park, home to the Pittsburg Pirates. Players and coaches will be invited to walk on the warning track prior to the June 21 game against the Pittsburg Pirates and the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Overall, the Cap Classic Pittsburg has been a staple of the city of Pittsburg for years and has allowed Atlantic Coast Baseball to create the Cap Classic Series in hopes of bringing the fun and excitement of this event to different cities across the United States," said Matt DeSantis, president and CEO of Atlantic Coast Baseball. The Cap Classic series is expanding in 2019 to Kansas City, Kan., and Minneapolis, Minn., and looking for multi-field complexes within a one-hour drive of Major League Baseball (MLB) stadiums. n U.S. Futsal Northeast Regional Indoor Soccer Championships Held at the Wildwoods Convention Center, Wildwoods, N.J.
