The area is a favorite for skiing, rafting, biking, hiking and more. The Annual Great American Hill Climb brings professional motorcyclists from around the country for the three-day event for epic vertical mountain climbing at the Billings Motorcycle Club just south of Billings on the Yellowstone River. The grounds include 1,421 acres of room to ride and com- pete. The Yellowstone River also offers whitewater raft- ing. Swords Rimrock Park and Black Otter Trail feature jogging trails, bike paths and underdeveloped nature areas suitable for outdoor recreation. www.visitbillings.com 7 Snohomish County, Washington Snohomish County is located in northwestern Washington between the Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains. With rugged mountains and forests, the area is a hotbed for trail runners and mountain bikers. The Securite' Luxury Gun Club West Side Mountain Bike Series – Lord Hill Trails recently completed its 12th year, drawing 346 participants and more than 200 spectators for the competition. Lord Hill Trails is one of eight races in the series. The Pie High Trail Run drew 236 racers and 100 spectators in July for the 5K, 10K and half marathon. Pie High Trail Run in Lord Hill Park takes runners on a hilly course through mossy forests and along ponds, creeks and wetland preserves on single-track logging roads, hiking paths and over bridges. The Lake Stevens Triathlon drew 403 participants and 300 spectators to last year's race which starts and finishes at North Cove Park in Lake Stevens. The USA Triathlon is a sanctioned event held the second Saturday in September, which challenges runners in either an Olympic distance or sprint distance. Of note, the North Mountain Bike Skills Area located in Darrington opened July 15 as a single-track venue with beginner and black-diamond levels. The project is the first of its kind in the region and serves as a community-backed, youth-focused bike skills area to increase ride potential on legal, sustainable trails. www.snohomish.org/sports 8 Columbia, South Carolina As the capital of South Carolina, Columbia is the heart of the state, blending historic and modern into a beautiful Southern experience. With three major rivers offering more than three miles of water, rowers come here for training and competition. The Saluda and Broad Rivers meet as rapids and become the tranquil Congaree. Outdoor adventure includes the annual Ultimate Challenge Mud Run, mountain biking at Lexington BMX, canoeing and kayaking on the Saluda, skateboarding at Owens Field Skate park, motocross, paintball and wakeboarding. Harbison State Forest provides 20 miles of single-track trails for bikers and hikers. Weekend with The Pros is the largest gathering of spectators for watersports on Lake Murray, according to the event organizers. More than 1,200 fans attend the two-day event each June. The Ultimate Challenge Mud Run will celebrate its 25th anniversary on May 19, 2018, in a fierce obstacle race designed and built by former Marines, with 36 military-style obstacles spread across 6.2 miles on private property. www.experiencecolumbiasc.com 9 Jarad Long
