March 2017 12 www.sportseventsmagazine.com www . sportseventsmagazine . com Industry U.S. Pulls Out of Track Junior Worlds INDIANAPOLIS — The United States will not partici- pate in the IAAF World Youth Championships scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya, in July, USA Track & Field announced. Kenya has a "Critical" crime and terrorism rating by the U.S. State Department. According to a news release, USATF conducted a risk assessment and reviewed the State Depart- ment's security summary. "Due to increased securi- ty costs and the fact that all athletes would be aged 18 and younger, USATF has decided not to hold a selection event nor to travel to the championship," the USATF news release stated. This was to be the last year of the event with plans calling for regional events for juniors rath- er than a world championship. "USATF is a strong supporter of ensuring the growth of track and field internationally, par- ticularly among young people. We will continue to work with our IAAF colleagues to ensure appropriate and productive competitive opportunities for youth in the world," the news release stated. VisitDFW Reboots Regional Tourism Effort DALLAS — Tourism and travel stakeholders in Dallas Fort Worth and the North Texas region launched a new collab- orative marketing initiative under the new organizational name VisitDFW, completely rebooting the regional tourism organization formerly called the Dallas Fort Worth Area Tourism Council (DFWATC). "We spent the last year engaging with stakeholders and visitors to determine the best way we could add value to the DFW-area tourism ecosystem in an increasingly competitive and sophisticated regional mar- ketplace. The result was a bold new vision for the organization that necessitated a reboot," said VisitDFW Chair Liliana Rivera. VisitDFW will deploy an aggressive content marketing initiative via a new website (http://www.visitdfw.com), social media, email and other proven digital marketing tactics. The new website will contain categorized stories behind the countless, diverse experiences that make up the DFW region. VisitDFW stories are written by real people from DFW to en- sure authenticity and to develop trust with potential visitors. Florida Sports Brings in $57 Billion The fiscal year of 2015-16 meant another bustling sports economy year to the Florida Sports economy, bringing 16 million visitors, a $57.4 billion economic footprint and 580,000 jobs to the Sunshine State. These numbers were deter- mined by an economic impact survey of the Florida Sports Industry, compiled by Hexad Analytics of Pensacola and commissioned by the Florida Sports Foundation, the state's lead sports promotion and development organization. The 16 million visitors coming to Florida for sports activities represent 15 percent of approximately 106 million non-resident visitors to Flori- da last year, according to Visit Florida. The $57.4 billion in eco- nomic impact is divided into four categories: Amateur and Leisure Sports, Professional Sports, Collegiate Sports and the Equine Industry. "The diversity of the sports industry in Florida makes it something closely watched by the nation's sports leaders," said John Webb, president of the Florida Sports Foundation. "Through the marketing and sales efforts of the profession- als within the state's 27 sports commissions, 10 professional teams, the support of the local communities in constructing state-of-the-art sports facilities and Florida's temperate year- round climate, it all combines for a thriving sports industry." It is ► t SPORTS Talk COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — USA Swimming and Sigma Gamma Rho announced a multi-year extension of their suc- cessful partnership to prevent drowning and increase swim participation within the African-American community. The two organizations will advance their efforts to increase awareness about water safety, the need for swim lessons and participation in swimming at a community-based level. Members of Sigma Gamma Rho will continue to promote par- ticipation in communities across the country through in-water safety events, workshops and fitness swimming. With 500 nationwide chapters, the sorority hosts infor- mational "Swimming in the Deep" seminars and conducts a variety of swim events across the country with Olympian and SGRho member Maritza Correia McClendon.
