Advertise Directories Natural Venues Guide Convention Centers Guide DIFFERENCE Maker When A Baseball Team Exits Casper, This Tourism CEO Buys A New One BY KRISTEN MCINTOSH You might say 37-year-old Aaron McCreight has been hooked on baseball his entire life. "I've played baseball my whole life. I was born and raised in St. Louis, a great baseball city. I come from a baseball family. I coached high school legion baseball in Missouri for three years. My first job ever was as an umpire at 15. I'm a baseball guy," said McCreight, who has served as the CEO of the Casper, Wyo., Convention and Visitors Bureau for almost four years now. "I'm relative- ly new to tourism, but baseball is old hat for me." Baseball is more than "old hat" to him today. That's because he is well into his first season as an owner of the Casper Cutthroats Baseball Club, a member of the Mountain Collegiate Baseball League. On Monday, June 4, the team made its debut at Mike Lansing Field, following the purchase and subsequent move to Grand Junction, Colo., of the Pioneer League Casper Ghosts by the owners of the Colorado Rockies. Prior to embarking on a career in tourism, McCreight worked in profession- al sports for about a decade. "In minor league baseball, I started out as director of media relations and broadcasting and moved my way up the chain. I ended up as assistant general manager of several baseball teams and an indoor football team. I've worked for the Devil Rays, Braves, Padres, Reds, Rockies and an independent baseball team." With his experience managing baseball teams and not content to sit idly by with- out baseball in Casper for the 2012 sea- son, McCreight and his wife, April, put their heads together, reached out to CVB officials and local leaders for their sup- port, and decided to purchase their own team to play in Casper. ➤ PICTURED WITH THE Casper Cutthroats are Aaron and April McCreight and their twin 2-year-old boys. "I'm Not The Guy To Wait On Someone Else To Do It." www.sportseventsmagazine.com July 2012 17 ▼
