Home SPORTSTalk VENUE City To Resurface Outdoor Track GULF SHORES, Ala.—The Gulf Shores City Council has approved spending up to $300,000 to resurface the outdoor track at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex in time to host a state track meet that brings 4,000 people and more than $1.1 million to the area in May. The city has hosted the Alabama High School Athletic Association track and field meet for more than eight years at the complex. The event brings more than 2,000 athletes from high schools around the state. The eventʼs direct tax impact to the city is $30,000 annually, with an overall economic impact of more than $1 million. ■ Sanshou Tournament June 30, drawing more than 160 Sanshou fighters from across the nation to compete for a spot to represent the United States at the Fourth Annual World Junior Championship in Macau, China. The event was produced by the USA Wushu- Kungfu Federation Inc. Sanshou, a Chinese martial art, is a hand-to-hand self- defense system and combat sport that combines full-contact kickboxing. This year marked the first time the United States will send junior-level athletes to compete in an international Sanshou competition. Venues National Sports Center Eyes New Baseball Fields BLAINE, Minn.—The National Sports Center Foundation (NSCF) announced it has awarded a consulting contracts to CSL International to study the feasibility of developing a large baseball complex on the NSC campus and to compare that specific usage with other potential uses for future field development. For the study, CSL will part- ner with the Ripken Design Group to bring a national per- spective. The study will pro- vide analysis of construction costs, market and revenue potential, economic impact projects, and operational costs. Specifically, CSL will com- pare the development of a baseball and softball complex with more general field devel- opment. The study is expected to be completed this summer.
