August 2016 40 Gymnastics Creates A BUZZ An Olympic year always provides a good boost for the sport, said Cheryl Jar- rett, vice president of member services for USA Gymnastics, the national governing body for the sport in the United States. "We have had steady growth since 2012 of around nine to twelve percent per year, but in an Olympic year, it's typical for us to have about a fifteen to twenty percent growth." Current membership in USA Gym- nastics, including athletes, coaches, club owners and others, stands at more than 180,000. The establishment of new clubs is im- portant to the growth of the sport, Jarrett said. "Many current clubs and coaches have waiting lists, so where we are look- ing for expansion is in the development of new clubs. We expect around five to six percent growth in new clubs this year."
