August 2016 26 Special Feature: 2016 NATURAL VENUES GUIDE Knoxville is famous for its mountain bike trails and the Powerboat Superleague Classic on the Tennessee River. "One of the best factors for Knoxville to host outdoor sports events is you don't have to travel very far to be in the wilderness," said Parker Medley, sports sales director for Visit Knoxville Sports Commission. "Within four miles of the heart of downtown, you can find your- self in our Urban Wilderness, which has many biking and hiking trails. Knox- ville has all the elements for everyone to enjoy the outdoors." Knoxville has gained quite a reputa- tion in recent years as a great outdoor sports locale. Situated in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, where the confluence of the Holston and French Broad Rivers form the Tennessee River, Knoxville and Knox County are home to three rivers, two lakes and mile upon mile of hiking and biking trails. Most locations are right on the edges of the modestly sized city's downtown or within just a few miles of it. Knoxville Urban Wilderness incor- porates 1,000 forested acres along the downtown's south waterfront with more than 50 miles of multi-use trails and Photos courtesy of Visit Knoxville Sports Commission
