At the heart of the National Collegiate
Wrestling Association is a family.
Executive Director Jim Giunta reiterates
his job is less of a job and more of a
mission, and that attitude is refected
throughout the organization.
"Since the NCWA is an all-volunteer
organization with over 300 volunteers
including our Dallas staff of six, all
those involved passionately believe in
our mission," he says. "The association
is more like a ministry to us than a busi-
ness, and although we now have almost
200 college affliates and over 30,000
NCWA alumni, we still operate
and feel like a big family."
Giunta points to the 6:12 Project,
which encourages all member insti-
tutions to give back to their local
communities, as well as host communi-
ties for national and conference
events, as a way of teaching athletes
more compassion.
That friendship that Giunta described
even extends to athletes who compete
against each other. "We compete hard
like most college athletic programs,
but at the end of the day we really are
all friends," he says. "We break bread
together in a league-wide awards
banquet at year end to celebrate every-
one's success. Opposing teams and
athletes are sincerely happy, even for
those that had defeated them during
the year." ►
