CVBs & Sports Commissions Sponsored Content December 2015 102 ollowing the historic and devas- tating floods in early October, the Columbia, S.C., community has shown incredible strength as we all work together to rebuild. Resilient in the face of disaster, the area is moving forward. Part of the damage incurred includes the loss of the Columbia Rowing Club dock. Columbia is home to a strong local rowing community, as well as a popular destination for Northern collegiate row- ing teams for winter and spring training on the Broad River. Since 2003, the Richland County rowing facility has hosted 57 teams for seasonal training, generating a direct economic impact of more than $2 million. The Columbia Rowing Club began in 1999 with the help of Richland County and the River Alliance. Since then, the club has established substantial adult and youth programs. The area's temperate climate makes it an ideal destination for year-round water sports. The warm tem- peratures paired with an unobstructed, three-mile stretch of the Broad River have led to Columbia's quick rise to becoming the top choice training destina- tion for a number of prestigious rowing schools from all over the Northern United States. So far, the support to rebuild the dock has been astounding. More than $18,000 of the $35,000 goal has been raised. The Columbia Rowing Club is currently accepting donations through a Go Fund Me page ( arowingclub) and hopes to have the dock rebuilt in time for the 2016 season. In the meantime, Columbia is open for business and welcomes everyone to make a trip, whether for a sporting event or lei- sure purposes. n F Columbia, S.C.: Famously Strong Scott Powers Executive Director (803) 545-0009 Columbia Regional Sports Council "Columbia's beautiful weather, scenic rivers and warm hospitality culminate in ideal conditions for rowing, as well as an enjoyable visit."
