EDITOR'S PLAY-BY-PLAY Golf's Big Drive For Participants Using a variety of initiatives, leaders in the sport of golf are making a major play to retain existing players, regain those they've lost and attract brand new players. One of the latest campaigns instituted by the United States Golf Association (USGA), called "While We're Young," is a move to combat slow pace of play. There are online videos, quizzes and other resources that provide solutions to slow play both from a player and a facility perspective. The PGA of America and LPGA are also working to grow participation with programs targeting both adults and children that address initial golf instruction as well as ongoing training and play in fun ways that inspire a lifelong love of the sport. Colorful Fun @ The Color Run In May, I got to experience first-hand an event that is experiencing explosive growth—the Color Run. The event was held in my hometown of Orange Beach, Ala., and drew about 5,000 participants. I wasn't a runner but rather served as a volunteer along with several of my dear friends. It was our job to supply runners with cups of water at the halfway point of the run and later clean up the empties they left behind. I have to admit that I've never so skillfully poured and stacked several feet high what seemed like thousands of paper cups filled with water. Runners scooped up their cups and continued on their way to the finish line and more festivities. What I found so rewarding about this day was not only being a cog in the wheel of a wellrun event—not to mention participants having an absolute blast—was that Color Run organizers contributed money for my hours spent volunteering toward my designated charity (my son's middle school football team). Now, that's a great way to find volunteers in the local community and give something back at the same time! Thanks, Color Run, for an awesome Saturday and for much-needed funds for my son's team. Be on the lookout in the next issue for an article on recruiting, managing and maintaining volunteers. We've got some great advice to share. Kristen S.
