SOUTH CAROLINA Variety is the name of the game when it comes to South Carolina. Mountains, beaches, lakes and rivers can all be found in the Palmetto State, along with hundreds of world-renowned golf courses and state-of-the-art venues. "South Carolina offers so much variety in a relatively small area," said Marion Edmonds, tourism communications director for the South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism Agency. "Our mountains and our coast are only a few hours apart. And we have everything from the nation's most intact historic city, Charleston, to a vibrant active city that sits on the edge of the mountains, Greenville—and pretty much everything in between." Combine that with a great climate that allows for year-round opportunities for individual or organized sporting events and South Carolina pretty much has it all. What's Going On… Anderson Anderson is in northwest South Carolina about two hours from Atlanta and Charlotte. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Anderson offers two lakes, Hartwell and Russell, which make the area an ideal spot for fishing tournaments. Anderson Recreation Center is a 32,000-square-foot facility with two gyms. Anderson Sports Center boasts eight tennis courts, seven baseball/softball fields and three soccer fields. Charleston Charleston, the oldest city in the state, sits on South Carolina's southern coastline. In 1786, the South Carolina Golf Club was established in what is now downtown Charleston. In fact, the term "green fee" is thought to have evolved from the membership fees paid by club members to maintain their course.
