In the almost three years since the program launched, MLB players, coaches and thousands of children across the country have participated in a variety of events that remind people that baseball can be played in many forms, from wiffle ball to pickup games or tossing the ball to one another. Simple games played between friends such as a home run derby, stickball, "Pitch, Hit & Run" and other forms of play help young people develop skills in less formal situations than outfitting a team in uniforms and requiring nine baseball players on both sides. Part of the Play Ball initiative is "Baseball Near You," a database of playing opportunities by zip code that includes more than 10,000 leagues across the United States. The Play Ball Coaching App is also available as a free tool for coaches that can be downloaded through Google Play and the Apple App Store. MLB also offers: RBI, a youth outreach program to revive baseball in inner cities; Fun At Bat, is a bat and ball program that emphasis character development, functional movement, active play and fun; the Junior Home Run Derby for youngsters 14 and under; and Play Ball Weekends where major league players bring young baseball fans together.
