On the youth sports front, Tammy Leytham looks at the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and its rising popularity. Known as pankration, the sport limits contact striking and emphasizes technique and sportsmanship – a far cry from the images seen on the adult and professional level of United Fight Club (UFC) matches where athletes defensively cover their heads while being straddled by an opponent who is throwing blood-spattering strikes. With 3.4 million kids age six and older participating in pankration each year and more than a million of those kids competing in sanctioned events, this is one sport that is literally fighting for acceptance. Two states, California and Florida currently allow organized competitions, but the perception of locking kids in cages and letting them fight it out to the end makes lawmakers reluctant to legalize youth mixed martial arts matches in their states. With strict rules, regulations, education, certification and a focus on core disciplines, this sport may soon come out of the shadows and into an arena near you. See page 37.
