August 2018 26 www.sportseventsmagazine.com Special Feature: 2018 NATURAL VENUES GUIDE This mile-high Arizona city and the surrounding area features rolling meadows, lakes, streams, gran- ite mountains and four distinct seasons and the largest Ponderosa pine forest in the United States: 1.25 million acres. Prescott's Whiskey Off-Road race and event attracts more than 1,800 par- ticipants in this high-altitude mountain bike race and three-day event each spring. The race has been held for more than 15 years and showcases some of the area's outstanding trails and parks. More than 15 years ago, two local riders created the original Whiskey course on a small piece of US Forest land. The course has been altered a bit over the years but repeat riders say it is just as challenging. The race starts on historic Whiskey Row and quickly climbs into Prescott National Forest. With single track, double track, gravel and paved road, this race is where amateur and pro riders test their mettle. The race is open to different levels of riders, including events such as a junior 15-mile proof ride, a 30- and 50-mile proof adult race and and a fat tire race. Finishers earn a commemorative pint glass emblazoned with the distance completed. The three-day event includes a downtown music festival and free cold drinks from Four Peaks Brewing Company. The next Whiskey Off-Road is slated for April 26 – 28, 2019. Prescott also holds the Whiskey Row Marathon, "one of the toughest marathons in the United States," according to organizers. The race climbs from 5,000 feet to 7,000 feet in elevation, hence the organizers description. Information provided by the City of Prescott.
