In addition to the "train race," Durango has hosted the Mountain Bike National Championships, the Colorado Off Road Championships, the Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships, the Collegiate Road National Championships and the first internationally sanctioned UCI Mountain Bike World Championships and the 2001 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup races for cross country, downhill and dual slalom. The nearby San Juan National Forest includes the largest wilderness area in Colorado and the area offers hundreds of miles of trail adventures, rock climbing, backcountry skiing and fishing on the Gold Medal-rated Animas River. With three days of events taking place around the Iron Horse on Memorial Day weekend, there's a little something for everyone, including live music, trea- sure hunts for kids and the legendary Downtown MTB (mountain bike) race that incorporates singletrack, pavement, man-made features and a ride through Steamworks Brewery, where a thirsty cyclist might grab a beer.
