July 2018 16 ore than 120 years ago, representatives from seven Midwest colleges met at The Palmer House Hil- ton in Chicago for the first time, leading to the creation of the longest-operating Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States. Since then, The Palmer House has continued to be a no- table presence related to athletic events. It has a long-standing history of working with professional organizations, national governing bodies, collegiate markets and endurance events. Located near several areas that promote fitness activity – including Buckingham Fountain and Grant Park – and one-and- a-half miles from Solider Field, the hotel is popular with sports groups and athletes. The property is also near the Chicago lakefront running and biking path, and two-and-a-half miles from the United Center. A focus on wellness, competition and sportsmanship is continuing to emerge in the country, and fit, sports-minded parents are passing that lifestyle on to their children. They want to play. Meanwhile, planners are keen to find places to sleep that also offer other benefits that will help their events go smoothly. When planning the next tournament, playoff, competition, match, race or event, every bit of extra consideration can help sway the decision, with hous- ing for the event being one of the major considerations, as it affects the team's experience. Housing for events is a huge market, racking up billions of dollars per season for major brands. A group of third-party management companies created a Sports Advisory Board, led by Tim Ellis with Wyndham to create a program to enhance the sports travel experience in hotels, said Josh Akright, vice president for Pse Event Housing. As a result, a program was created that adopted criteria and policy for a hotel to follow to be recognized as a Sports Approved Hotel. "Some hotels will offer their meeting space for teams to congregate while not at the competition venue, giving them space to be together as a team and not disrupt other guests in the hotel.
