Home SPORTSTalk Industry Richmond Hires New Sports Development Director RICHMOND, Va.—The Richmond Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau (RMCVB) recently reorganized to support improved communi- ty relations and bolster efforts to attract sports events to the region, welcoming Corey Peterson as sports development director. "Tourism is a $1.75 billion industry in the Richmond region," said Jack Berry, presi- dent/CEO of the RMCVB. Peterson EVENT New Master's Of Sports Management At UIndy INDIANAPOLIS—Debuting this fall, the Master of Science in Sport Management program at the University of Indianapolis (UIndy) will prepare students for manage- ment-level careers in intercol- legiate athletics. Home to the National Collegiate Athletic Junior Golfers Hit Links In Greeneville For National Championships GREENEVILLE, Tenn.—A total of 52 junior golfers from six states and Canada participated in the Amateur Athletic Unionʼs Golf National Championships staged in July at Link Hills Country Club. This is the first of three consecutive years that Link Hills is scheduled to host the AAU Nationals. ■ 8 August 2012 Association, Indianapolis is called the "Amateur Sports Capital of the World." Courses will be co-taught by staffers from national governing bodies, conference offices and intercollegiate athletics programs based in the city. The program will be offered by UIndy's Department of Kinesiology. "With recent additions to our tourism product such as new hotels, River City Sportsplex and Greater Richmond Aquatic Partnership, and events like Richmond 2015 and Redskins Training Camp coming up, that number is sure to grow." Peterson comes to RMCVB from the Hampton CVB in Hampton, Va., where he served as sports services and marketing manager and was responsible for the strategic marketing of citywide sports events. Sports Events Boost Tourism On Gulf Coast GULF SHORES & ORANGE BEACH, Ala.—According to recent news reports, summer ▼ lodging revenues were expect- ed to be record-breakers, thanks in part to sports events that were held in the area. "Our sports events have been wildly successful," Beth Gendler, vice president of sales at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism told local news reporters. As of July 31, athletics were respon- sible for booking 54,000 room nights so far this year, com- pared to 48,000 room nights for all of 2011. Youth US Youth Soccer Announces 2013 Championship Series Host Cities FRISCO, Texas—US Youth Soccer announced locations for the regional and national cham- pionships of the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series. The 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championships will be held at the Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kan. "We are excited to be back at the Overland Park Soccer Complex for the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championships and look for- ward to working with Kansas State Youth Soccer and the complex staff," said John Sutter, president of US Youth Soccer. "Each year, more than 10,000 teams play in our National Championship Series as teams test their development and skill, earning their way from state to regional events, with the ultimate goal of earning a ticket to the US Youth Soccer National Championships.
