Home Subscribe EDITOR'S PLAY-BY-PLAY Making The Most Of Mother Nature's Field Of Play As more and more cities realize the upside of hosting sports events of all kinds, they are pulling out all the stops to create venues that can be used by outside groups—including venues that capitalize on the existing natural environment. Take, for example, Oak Ridge, Tenn., whose Melton Hill Lake was recently used by US Rowing for one of its events. A.J. Dominique, event manager for US Rowing, said, "It's great for participants because there is little to no cur- rent. The on-land areas are close and easily accessible to the dock area, mak- ing everything close and convenient. The peninsula allows for a close-quar- ters area between teams and vendors, which helps create a championship atmosphere." Learn more about this and other destinations throughout the country that are making use of Mother Nature's sports venues for tournaments and competi- tions of all kinds. For a list of sports-friendly destinations with a history of hosting such events, turn to page 25. While not intended to be all-inclusive, this resource guide is designed to assist organizers in planning future events. Firsts & Fallen Barriers…What The Olympics Taught Us A column by Wanda L. Rutledge, special events director of the National Amateur Baseball Federation and president of the National Council of Youth Sports, shared her insight on the many firsts and fallen barriers we saw during the Olympics. Here some of the highlights: Parents and others can display good behavior from the sidelines; cheaters never win; and female athletes can take their place in the spotlight and break some pretty tough barriers along the way. Read Wanda's article on page 11 for these and other lessons learned from the London Olympic Games. 3 Keys For Fueling Performance In Young Athletes When it comes to making sure youth athletes are ready to play, at the founda- tion of their success is proper nutrition. Contributing Editor Marcia Bradford reached out to Nancy Clark, a registered dietitian who counts among her clients the Boston Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics as well as the Breakers women's soccer team, for her advice on how to help kids properly fuel up for optimum athletic performance. There are three very specific ways sports organizations can help their youth athletes get on the right nutritional path. Turn to page 38 to read the article.
