February 2017 50 Albany Albany has hosted a variety of NCAA events since the early 1990s, including the Division 1 Men's Hockey Frozen Four, wrestling championships, men's and women's basketball regionals and more. This year the state capital will host the NYSPHSAA State Wrestling Champion- ships, MAAC Men's/Women's Basketball Championships and the Special Olympics of New York. Siena College offers facilities for basketball, volleyball, swimming, track, lacrosse, soccer and more. Hudson Valley Community College has facilities to accommodate basketball, hockey, track and more. University at Albany facilities accommodate basketball, volleyball, track, football, soccer and more. Convention center: Empire State Plaza Convention Center is a 26,000-square-foot facility that hosts sports such as boxing, cheer/dance and wrestling. Coming soon: Opening in March, Albany Capital Center is a 22,500-square- foot facility that will host sports such as basketball, badminton, volleyball, roller derby and martial arts. Contact: Albany County CVB, Binghamton In southern New York, near the Penn- sylvania border, is Binghamton. Sports are frequently held here, including the New York is big on sports. The Empire State is home to the nation's oldest sport- ing venue (Saratoga Race Course), one of the few places in the world to host the Olympic Games more than once (Lake Placid) and the birthplace of fly fishing (the Catskills). Albany is home to USS Slater, a World War II destroyer escort restored to its 1945 configura- tion. Of 563 built during World War II, the Slater is the only destroyer escort left afloat in the United States.
