Page 32 of 67 January 2017 33 As with other races, the Valley Forge Revolu- tionary 5 Mile Run is about having fun and celebrating physical fitness. But its bigger mission goes much deeper. The annual event was created to support the national icon Valley Forge National Historical Park. Valley Forge National Historical Park spans 3,500 acres and houses the site of the 1777-78 encampment of the Continental Army. "Our event is unique in a way that ties the recreational use to the historic significance," Kirsten Tallman said. "Two-thirds of the visitation to the park is by the recreation- al user. Many appreciate the large green space as a place to go and reflect, unwind or train. The hills found in Valley Forge are frequent and with 28 miles of authorized trails that are popular for hiking, biking and horseback riding, it proves to be a good spot for runners. The historic significance of the troops overcoming hardships to unify and become a stronger fighting force in the American Revolution is intertwined in our messaging to join us each spring for the Revolutionary Run." The run includes a five-mile trek on a USA Track & Field (USATF)-certified course that navigates the scenic park. Runners begin at the Muhlenberg Brigade Huts and along the route pass the statue of General Antho- ny Wayne, the marquee monument where Washington set up his tent headquarters, and the statute of Baron von Steuben and the Patriots of the African Descent Monu- ment. The event also includes a three-mile walk and the 1.776 km Young Patriots Run for kids ages six to 14. All proceeds from registration and spon- sorship benefit the Valley Forge National Historical Park. Over the years, the event has raised nearly a quarter million dollars to support its cause to maintain and enhance the visitor's experience of Valley Forge. n Valley Forge Revolutionary 5 Mile Run Kirsten Tallman, Race Director King of Prussia, PA SPECIAL FEATURE: Awards & Recognition Issue
