A SWEET TREAT! To satisfy a sweet tooth, visit Zaharakos, a unique ice cream parlor in Columbus, Ind., that dates back to 1900. Three brothers from Greece opened Zaharakos as a candy store in 1900. Guests will certainly feel as if they stepped back in time when they see the stained glass, carved oak, marble, Tiffany-styled lamp, and double soda fountains. www.zaharakos.com Indiana might be best known for basketball, but there's so much more going on in the Hoosier State. Golfing, skiing, hiking, biking—it can all be found here. "We have the largest single-day sporting event in the world, the Indy 500, so we are big enough and experienced enough to handle the biggest events possible," said Columbus Area Visitors Center's Jim Dietz, vice president of Sports Indiana, a statewide sports tourism initiative that represents numerous communities. "The Indiana Sports Corporation was the first sports commis- sion created in the country, so we have a long, rich history of hosting successful sporting events." The Indiana Sports Corporation was formed in 1979, and it has helped bring more than 400 national and international events to the state, including 17 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and 55 NCAA Championship events. One aspect that sets this city apart is its volunteer base, said Lisa Wallace, communications manager for the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association. "Eight thousand volunteers were needed for Super Bowl XLVI, and more than 13,000 signed up," she said. "Of those 13,000 who participated, the attendance rate for showing up for shifts that week was around 98 percent—very unusual—and it speaks to the credibility and reliability of the volunteer base in the city."
