S.P.O.R.T.S. 2012 DeVos Fieldhouse, Holland, Mich. With four professional sports teams and two high-profile universities, Michigan is certainly no stranger to sporting events. "Sports are part of our culture here in Michigan, no matter what your interests are or where you go in the state," said Michelle Begnoche, senior communications specialist for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. In addition to on-the-field sports, the state is a popular spot for water activities as well. Michigan is surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes and boasts 11,000 inland lakes, which means visitors are never more than six miles away from a body of water in Michigan. "Michigan offers unique and authentic experiences that sports fans can't get anywhere else," Begnoche said. "We are a four-season state, making us uniquely qualified to host sports played in all types of weather and environments. We also have terrific indoor sports facilities and provide a hospitable environment for the entire range of sports. Whether it's spring training, playing football in the crisp fall air, racing down an ice luge, or hitting the slopes in winter—or anything in between—it's probably happening in Michigan."
