Sam Brownback and Sporting Kansas City CEO Robb Heineman announced the development of a U.S. Soccer National Training Center complex in Kansas City. The new $75-plus million, 100,000-square-foot project will house the National Training and Coaching Development Center and fea- ture 16 fields for professional and youth teams. The com- plex will also include a 125- room, full-service hotel and facilities tailored toward strength and nutrition. Heineman said the project is expected to break ground this fall and open in time for the United States-hosted Copa America in 2016. New Venue Will Cater To Basketball & Volleyball HARRISON, Wis.—Private investors from Appleton and Green Bay will break ground this week on a 32,000-square- foot, hard-court athletic facili- ty catering to basketball and volleyball. The $4 million facility is aimed at competitive youth teams in the Fox Valley and traveling off-season tourna- ments, said Appleton's Joe Simo, one of the owners. "This will be for serious club teams that want hard- wood because that's what they'll be playing on in col- lege," Simo said. "When completed it will be the largest all-hardwood facility in northeast Wisconsin." Plans call for the Lake Park Sportzone to house three full- sized basketball courts with optional dividers that can be converted to six full-sized volleyball courts. New Aquatic Center Planned For Lancaster, Pa. LANCASTER, Pa.—A new aquatic and wellness center is planned for the Burle Business Park in Lancaster County. With a mission of promot- ing swimming through educa- tion, competition, leisure, fitness and therapeutics while supporting athletes and the general public, the venue will contain a 50- meter-deep water "stretch" pool with 22 seven-foot-wide, 25-yard cross lanes; one- and three-meter spring board diving; one-, three- and five-meter platform diving; a six-lane, 25-yard warm-up pool; and four sets of men's and women's locker rooms. Maryland County Wants To Expand Athletic Complex WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.—Wicomico County officials are hoping to nearly double the size of the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex on Naylor Mill Road. The expansion would add 35 acres of baseball and soccer fields. It would also include infrastructure upgrades. The city of Salisbury owns the land needed for the expansion, and the city coun- cil has given the mayor the green light to proceed with talks with the county for the expansion. Recently renovated, the complex features four softball fields (three lighted), one lighted baseball field, two lighted Bermuda Turf utility fields, two full-service con- cession stands, a shaded play- ground area, spectator seating and free parking for 720 vehicles. The complex has hosted multiple national champi- onship events, including ASA Women's Major Modified, USSSA Girls' Fast Pitch, USSSA Baseball, and NSA Men's Fast Pitch. ■
