The competition has become a springboard for many service mem- bers and veterans to continue partic- ipating in sports programs in their communities after the event, with many having gone on to compete at the national and international levels. Two hundred service members and veterans are expected to com- pete in seven sports (archery, cycling, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair basketball) over six days. Five teams representing the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Special Operations Command will select their own rosters; each team will be composed of 40 athletes. ■ ARLINGTON, Texas—The 2014 United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials event was expected to break the record for partici- pation in the menʼs and womenʼs categories and overall. The trials, which were held in January at The Orleans Bowling Center in Las Vegas, had a sold-out menʼs division with 175 entries and 105 entries in the womenʼs division. The 280 entries would easily break the record of 256 set last year and marked a 10 percent year-to-year increase. The menʼs record of 171 was set last year, while the womenʼs record is 101 set in 2004. "The Team USA Trials have shown remarkable growth in the past six years," said USBC Managing Director of National Governing Body Neil Stremmel. "I think an influx of younger bowlers who enjoy being tested in a tough format has helped lead to the increase." Since 2008, entries have increased each year and 280 entries in 2014 would mark a 172 percent increase in bowlers since 2008. ■ Warrior Games COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee, announced that the 2014 Warrior Games presented by Deloitte would take place Sept. 28 – Oct. 4 utilizing venues at the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—USA Wrestling has announced it will support and promote a national youth sports initiative called "Jack Pinto…Getting Kids in the Game" campaign, which benefits the non- profit organization KIDS in the GAME (KITG). The mission of KITG is to inspire youth to thrive in life through sports by providing the resources that get and keep kids in the game. The new campaign honors the life of 6-year-old Jack Pinto who lost his life on Dec. 14, 2012, in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Jack was a wrestler with Newtown Youth Wrestling Association, a USA Wrestling club in his hometown. Jackʼs parents, Tricia and Dean Pinto, selected KIDS in the GAME, and helped launch a national awareness and fundraising campaign, which is dedicated to providing underprivileged children across America with the resources they need to get in the game and thrive in life through sports. USA Wrestling announced its partnership in support of the KITG initiative in January. The announcement was timed to coincide with the lead-up to The Jack Pinto Cup, an international Greco-Roman dual-meet event held recently at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. "As we raise more awareness and funds we will have the opportunity to get even more underprivileged kids active and into sports in Jackʼs honor," said Natalie Hummel, execu- tive director and co-founder of KITG. ■ *02-20 SE FEB 2014_SportsEvents TEMPLATE 2/11/14 10:34 AM Page 10
