February 2014 6 www.sportseventsmagazine.com EDITOR'S PLAY-BY-PLAY Green Is In For Sports Events The idea of leaving a smaller footprint on the environment is growing more prevalent throughout all facets of society today, including the world of sports events. In fact, the Natural Resources Defense Council called the influence the sports industry is now using to promote and advance better stewardship of the environment "a cultural shift of historic proportions." In this issue of SportsEvents, contributing writer Selena Chavis interviewed numerous professionals in the sports events industry to learn more about their efforts to reduce the impact of events on the environment. Green Sports Alliance Executive Director Martin Tull said his organization is working with hundreds of sports facilities that are working not only to be green on a per-event basis but also in developing systems and approaches that will produce results throughout the year. Chavis also interviewed organizers of sports events to learn more about what they are doing to keep their impact low. For example, organizers of the Wine Country Half marathon in Santa Rosa, Calif., said they manage to divert 80+ percent of their waste away from landfills and have even exceeded 90 percent at several races. This isn't easy, said Bart Davis of Destination Races, the race organizer. But, he said, "There are literally hundreds of ways to 'green' an event. They key is to choose the ones that work best for your event and the event's budget." Read the advice of Davis and others who share their best tips for greening your events in this special section. Pull Off A Great Event—Even When Time Is Running Short Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you are planning an event only a few weeks (or less) out? Well, you're not alone. But, according to the experts we talked to, a short planning timeframe does not mean your event is doomed for failure. Turn to page 14 for their words of wisdom. Planners Share Insight In this and future issues we will profile standout sports event planners whose accomplishments are worthy of industry recognition. We are proud to highlight these individuals in this issue and others throughout the year with an "éclat" award from SportsEvents. This new award is our way of recognizing outstanding performance and leadership within the sports events industry. Know someone you'd like to nominate for this award?
