The fourth floor offers sweeping vistas of the Empire State Plaza and the chance to ride a restored carousel. ■ www.sportseventsmagazine.com What's Going On… W EXPLORE THE EMPIRE STATE Tim Wilkes Albany County CVB Albany New York's historic capital, Albany, is located on the banks of the Hudson River, about 130 miles north of New York City. All sorts of sporting events will be hosted here in the coming months and years, including the America East Men's Basketball Tournament, the MAAC Basketball Championships, the Eastern Region Pop Warner Cheer and Dance Competition and the Symetra Futures. Hotel rooms: 6,000+ Major facilities: Times Union Center can seat up to 17,000 and features a 51,000-square-foot exhibit hall. Armory Sports & Convention Arena can seat up to 4,300 and houses a 38,000-square-foot main floor. SEFCU Arena is a 5,000-seat, multi-purpose venue. New convention center: The new Albany Capital Center will offer 82,000 square feet of space downtown. Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in June and continue through mid- year 2016. The Albany Capital Center will be connected to the Empire State Plaza Convention Center and the Times Union Center Arena. The first floor of the Albany Capital Center will contain 6,300 square feet of pre-function space, a 25,000- square-foot multi-purpose room, and administrative and storage spaces. The second floor will feature a 9,700-square- foot prefunction room, 9,000-square-foot meeting rooms, 10,000-square-foot junior ballroom and a 3,500-square-foot kitchen. The city offers easy accessibility in the Northeast region with three connecting highways. In 2014, Binghamton will open a new turf baseball field. Hotel rooms: 2,500 Major facilities: Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena is a 4,700-seat multi-sport facility ideal for basketball, hockey, wrestling and gymnastics. Binghamton University Events Center is a 6,000-seat venue. Binghamton University's outdoor stadium can seat 1,500 for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey. Union Endicott Ty Cobb Field is a 5,000-seat venue for football, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse. The 5,000-seat Binghamton Alumni Stadium hosts football, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse.
